Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) or as we understand Mahatma Gandhi.Mahatma Gandhi who was fondly addressed as “BAPU”.
Mahatma, (the great soul,) epitomizes the meaning of a man who was possibly the greatest human being the 20th century has seen.
Mani Bhavan, a simple two-storeyed house in Laburnum Road now converted into a museum and research centre. Gandhi stayed here between 1917 to 1934.
It has a library that consists of around 50,000 books & periodicals which contains books on and by Gandhi, Gandhian thoughts, freedom movements and allied subjects. It has glimpses of Gandhi in mini figures, depicting Gandhi’s life.
Gandhi's simple room remains untouched and there's a wonderful photographic record of his life, along with dioramas and original documents such as letters he wrote to Hitler and US President Roosevelt.
Just a few hundred meters from Mani Bhavan is the Gowalia Tank, where Gandhi held a meeting in August 1942 to launch the famous ‘Quit India Movement'. Gowalia tank is now renamed August Kranti Maidan (August Revolution Square), in commemoration of that meeting.
Today Mahatma Gandhi is no more a person, he has become a phenomenon. In his lifetime he fought for many causes; colonialism, racial discrimination, economic exploitation and India's Independence, but predominantly he fought for human rights which was the pivot of his existence. His weapons were Satya (truth) and Ahinsa (non-violence).
Gandhi's entire life was a powerful message for mankind. His every breath was dedicated to the pursuit of truth (god), in its most pristine manifestations, justice and liberty for mankind.
